Let's Get Emotional: The How-To Guide

The first day for Nathan at school as a new student. Despite feeling nervous and uneasy, he is able to manage his emotions by taking deep breaths and reminding himself that it will be a great day. He notices that other students look at him with mistrust since they don't know him yet, but he is confident that this will change in the coming days. Nathan feels ready to deal with this and is excited to see how his new school experience will unfold.


Nathan's ability to succeed in his story largely depends on his emotional intelligence, often referred to as EQ. This skill enables him to handle his own emotions, understand the signals of others around him, and overcome upcoming obstacles with strength and self-care.


Psychologist Daniel Goleman, a well-known author in the field of emotional intelligence, was the first to popularize the concept in the 90s. He identified five key components that are essential for successfully managing our emotions and the information we derive from them. Here we will explore each of these components and provide some ideas for improving them in our daily lives.



Self-Awareness - What do I feel?

Being self-aware means being able to perceive and comprehend our emotions clearly. It's not just about recognizing our feelings but also understanding how they affect our thoughts and behaviors. We can enhance our self-awareness by taking time for self-reflection, keeping a journal of our emotions, or practicing meditation and mindfulness exercises. Additionally, seeking feedback from trustworthy individuals can help us understand how we react to certain situations.


Self Regulation- How do I respond?

Managing our emotions to promote well-being and effective decision-making is known as self-regulation. It helps us respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively. To develop self-regulation, we can adopt methods and techniques that enable us to control our emotional responses, such as deep breathing, taking a brief pause, and other grounding exercises. Practicing cognitive reframing can also enhance our ability to regulate ourselves by allowing us to shift our perspective and find positive aspects under challenging situations.



Intrinsic Motivation - What moves me to act?

We can define intrinsic motivation as the force that drives us from within to achieve our goals. It is powered by our emotions and values and propels us forward. When we align our efforts with our passions and aspirations, it is this impulse that arises. To increase intrinsic motivation, we should embrace continuous learning, set meaningful goals, and find purpose in our pursuits. Furthermore, reflecting on our achievements and celebrating milestones can add energy to this internal drive.


Empathy - What about the others?

By connecting with the emotions of others and understanding their experiences and perspectives on a deep level, we cultivate empathy. This allows us to not only comprehend their feelings but also share in their joys and struggles. Practicing active listening creates a foundation for empathy to flourish. Seeking out diverse perspectives and engaging in open conversations also help broaden our points of view.


Social Skills- How do I connect?

Having effective communication, conflict resolution strategies, and collaboration skills are essential in building healthy and meaningful relationships. By mastering social skills, we can express our thoughts and feelings assertively while taking into consideration other people's emotions. It also helps us turn potential conflicts into opportunities for growth and understanding. To improve our social skills, we can observe and learn from others' interactions, seek feedback, and invest time in understanding cultural features that affect communication.



Developing emotional intelligence offers many benefits. It helps us build genuine connections with others, communicate effectively, and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and those around us. These skills can lead to a more fulfilling existence. Like Nathan, look for ways to strengthen your self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.
